5Plus2 Challenge

EXCUTING THE 5PLUS2 CHALLENGE

At the core of the 5Plus2 Challenge is a twice-yearly, one-week challenge.

  • From Monday to Friday, participants challenge themselves to follow a diabetic-friendly diet.

  • They may continue the diet on Saturday and Sunday or participate in local 5Plus2 Challenge community events.

While weekdays focus on individual commitment, weekends are about collective participation. Ideally, an exhibition hall is rented for the weekend, where local and national vendors promote their products and services. Events such as a 5K or 10K walk and a Q&A session with doctors and vendors are organized.

In smaller communities where a large-scale event can't be organized, our Community Outreach Area Coordinators (COACs) and volunteers may organize a small-scale event. It may be as small as a table/ booth setup at local churches, malls, gyms, or a local high school football or basketball game. It is all about reaching out to the community. The goal is to create an opportunity for one-on-one interaction through physical participation and engagement.

Even on weekdays, our outreach team will stay active to promote the initiative at any opportunity.

The 5Plus2 Challenge Week will also serve as a significant fundraising event by selling exhibition space and donation collections.

The support Network

Achieving the 5Plus2 Challenge's goals requires support from key players. We will actively seek participation and guidance from these five essential contributors.

  1. Medical Community Support

  2. Community Support

  3. Business Support

  4. Legislative Support

  5. Academic and Research Community Support

Community Outreach Team Structure

The Community Outreach Team is the backbone of the 5Plus2 Challenge’s local engagement efforts. It is organized into three levels to ensure a well-coordinated and scalable approach:

  • Community Outreach Team Leader (COTL)

  • Community Outreach Area Coordinators (COACs)

  • Volunteers

Community Outreach Team Leader (COTL)

The COTL plays a pivotal role in strategic planning, coordination, and oversight of all community outreach initiatives. As a core member of the leadership team, the COTL ensures that outreach efforts align with the mission of the 5Plus2 Challenge—to prevent diabetes through education, participation, and proactive community engagement.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Supervise and mentor COACs across all regions to maintain consistency and effectiveness.

  • Recruit, train, and manage both COACs and volunteers.

  • Serve as the primary liaison for partnerships with local organizations, health institutions, and community leaders.

Community Outreach Area Coordinators (COACs)

COACs are regional ambassadors of the 5Plus2 Challenge. With strong interpersonal skills and a passion for public health, they build relationships within their communities to expand the initiative’s visibility and impact.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Engage local clinics, hospitals, pharmacies, places of worship, and community centers to promote the 5Plus2 Challenge.

  • Represent the initiative at health fairs, wellness events, and medical exhibitions.

  • Set up and manage outreach booths or tables at public venues such as malls, schools, gyms, and marketplaces.

  • Collaborate with volunteers and local stakeholders to enhance participation and outreach efforts.

Volunteers

Volunteers are the heart of the 5Plus2 grassroots movement. As active community members, they support local outreach efforts and raise awareness about diabetes prevention at the ground level.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Distribute brochures, flyers, and educational materials at community events and public spaces.

  • Assist COACs and the COTL in organizing and promoting outreach activities.

  • Serve as advocates by encouraging friends, families, and neighbors to participate in the 5Plus2 Challenge.

Business Support

Businesses in the food industry play a vital role in the success of the mission by offering more diabetic-friendly options at accessible prices. We will actively encourage food companies to acknowledge and embrace their responsibility in addressing the diabetes epidemic. As part of our advocacy efforts, we will push for clearer and more prominent food labeling, specifically calling for added sugars and total carbohydrate content to be displayed boldly on the front of packaging. Transparent labeling empowers consumers to make informed choices and is a critical step toward creating a healthier food environment for all.
